試験勉強的な鬱屈したマインドをサッパリさせる

こんにちは、大学入試の勉強となると、どうしても文法や読解学習に集中せざるを得なくなり、難しいパズルに取り組んでいる気持ちになってしまい、英語に対する臨場感が薄れてしまいます。


そこで今回は、コミュニケーションに彩りを与えるイディオムやフレーズをご紹介します。慣用表現の由来を調べたり、実際に使う場面を具体的に想像したりすることで、英語学習に対するモチベーションを炊き直すことができるでしょう。


1. a piece of cake・朝飯前

Meaning: Something that is very easy to do.

Example: I was worried about the math test, but it turned out to be a piece of cake.


2. hit the nail on the head・正鵠を射る

Meaning: To be exactly right about something.

Example: When Sarah said that John was feeling overwhelmed by work, she hit the nail on the head.


3. Break a leg!・「頑張れ!」

Meaning: A way to wish someone good luck, especially before a performance.

Example: My friend is auditioning for the school play today, so I told her to break a leg.


4. The ball is in your court・今度は君の番だ

Meaning: It's your turn to take action or make a decision.

Example: I've done everything I can to help you with your project. Now, the ball is in your court.


5. Bite the bullet・歯を食いしばって耐える

Meaning: To face a difficult or unpleasant situation with courage and determination.

Example: I know you don't want to apologize, but you need to bite the bullet and make things right.


6. Burn the midnight oil・夜遅くまで勉強する

Meaning: To work late into the night, especially studying or working on a project.

Example: I have a big exam tomorrow, so I'll be burning the midnight oil tonight to prepare.


7. Don't judge a book by its cover・見かけで判断するな

Meaning: Don't form an opinion about someone or something based solely on their appearance.

Example: He may not look like a typical athlete, but don't judge a book by its cover – he's actually a great runner.


8. Get the ball rolling・率先して始める

Meaning: To start something, especially a project or process.

Example: We need to get the ball rolling on planning the school dance, so let's start by forming a committee.


9. Go the extra mile・もうひと頑張りする

Meaning: To make an extra effort or do more than what is required.

Example: Our teacher always goes the extra mile to help us understand difficult concepts.


10. It's raining cats and dogs・ひどい土砂降りだ

Meaning: It's raining very heavily.

Example: I forgot my umbrella, and it's raining cats and dogs outside!


大切なのは、「具体的に自分が使用する場面を強くイメージする」ことです。覚えなければならないという発想から、「使ってみたい」という発想に切り替えることで、勉強に対する心向きも変わるかもしれません。
