#35　英語と写真でバーチャルツアー⑤～山口県・秋吉台～

日本最大のカルスト台地が広がる山口県・秋吉台。1955年に国定公園に、1964年に特別天然記念物に指定された秋吉台の面積は4,500ヘクタール（１ヘクタールは10,000m²）。毎度お馴染み（？）の「東京ドーム」に換算すると960個分…と言われてもピンときませんよね…（私もそうです）。ちなみに「東京ディズニーランド」に換算すると90個分、「皇居」に換算すると40個分。こちらの方がまだピンとくるかもしれません。

さて、そもそも「カルスト台地」とは何でしょうか？カルスト台地とは石灰岩が雨により溶食されてできた地形のことです。雨水の浸食が激しく、鍾乳洞（しょうにゅうどう）の形成過程で地表が陥没するカルスト台地では、「ドリーネ」と呼ばれるすり鉢状の窪（くぼ）みなど、特徴的な地形が形成されます。

秋吉台は大昔は海で、サンゴ礁が石灰岩になるということが3億5,000万年という長い年月の間繰り返され、なんと500ｍ～1,000mもの厚みの石灰岩になりました（秋吉台の石灰岩からは古生代の海洋生物の化石が見つかるとのことです）。 そこに雨水が流れ、長い時間をかけて石灰岩が溶けてできたのが秋吉台というわけです。

Mine City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is home to Akiyoshidai, the plateau with the highest concentration of karst formations in Japan, and Akiyoshido, the nation's largest and longest limestone cave.

Mine City「美祢（みね）市」。be home to ～「～があるところ」。plateau「高原、台地」。limestone「石灰岩」。limestone caveは「鍾乳洞」。ここではlongestと書かれていますが、日本で一番長い鍾乳洞は岩手県の安家洞（あっかどう）とのことです（総延長約23km）。秋芳洞（あきよしどう）は日本で二番目に長い鍾乳洞（総延長約11km）。

The area which encompasses the plateau and the cave is a designated quasi national park.

quasi national park「国定公園」とは、national park「国立公園」に準じる自然の景勝地。両方とも環境大臣が指定しますが、前者の管理は都道府県、後者の管理は環境省という違いがあります。日本には、国定公園が５７ヶ所、国立公園が３４ヶ所あります。

The vast lands of the Akiyoshidai Plateau are dotted with limestone pinnacles, presenting a landscape rarely seen in Japan.

The plateau was a coral reef an estimated 300 million years ago, and the karst topography that we see today is the result of the gradual dissolution of limestone by rain through the years.

Akiyoshidai's scenery can be enjoyed along the main road which winds through the highland (if you have a car) or from a network of hiking trails that covers the plateau.

windは動詞で「曲がりくねる」。名詞wind「風」とは別語。２つの語の発音の違いにも注意。

Akiyoshidai is also known for its different seasonal appearances: fresh green in spring and summer, reddish yellow in autumn and white from fallen snow in winter.

Below the surface at the south end of Akiyoshidai lies the Akiyoshido Cave.

belowは前置詞。よってthe surface ～はＳではない。liesの後ろがＳ。

The massive limestone cave has a total length of about nine kilometers, of which one kilometer is open to the public.

a total length of about nine kilometers「総延長約９km」とありますが、公式サイトによれば総延長は11km弱。

The cave is spacious and easy to navigate, with ample lighting, paved paths and leveled steps.

navigate「移動する」。ここでは他動詞で、意味上の目的語はThe cave。leveled step「平らな石段」。

Various natural formations can be seen along the course, such as terraces of limestone pools filled with water, underground waterfalls and a lovely stream of cobalt blue water flowing along the path.

terrace「傾斜面の段地」。「段々畑」をイメージすると分かり易い。秋芳洞内には「百枚皿」と呼ばれる段丘があり、中腹から流れ出る水の石灰分が長い年月の間に沈積して盛り上がり、皿状に固まってできたものだそうです。たくさんのお皿を並べたような見た目から「百枚皿」と名付けられましたが、実際には500以上あるとのこと。cobalt blue「コバルトブルー」は下の色のこと。

There is also an adventure path for an additional 300 yen that is slippery and slightly difficult to navigate, but rewards challengers with a nice view of the cave from a higher perspective.
