#149　Santa Claus

早いものでもうクリスマスの時期となりました。

今回は、サンタクロースについての記事を読んでみましょう。

そもそもクリスマスはイエス・キリストの誕生を祝う日ですが（☞ブログ#103㉕）、「サンタクロース」はそれと何の関係があるのでしょうか？

あまりにも当たり前で、だれも疑問に思わないクリスマスとサンタクロースの関係とは？

_➀Santa Claus, legendary figure who is the traditional patron of Christmas in the United States and other countries, brings gifts to children. _➁His popular image is based on traditions associated with Saint Nicholas, a 4th-century Christian saint who is typically depicted in red bishop’s robes. _➂The Dutch are credited with transporting the legend of Saint Nicholas (Sinterklaas) to New Amsterdam (now New York City), along with the custom of giving gifts and sweets to children on his feast day, December 6. _➃Father Christmas fills the role in many European countries.

➀英語のSanta Clausと日本語の「サンタクロース」の発音の違いに注意。legendaryはlegend「伝説」の形容詞形。figureは多義語。ここでは「人物」。patronは日本語の「パトロン」と発音が違う。patron「支援者、後援者」。

➁Saint Nicholas「聖ニコラウス」は、４世紀のギリシャの司教。困っている人に贈り物を施したとされ、この伝説がサンタクロースが子供たちにプレゼントを贈るというイメージにつながっているとされる。bishop「司教」は、the Twelve Apostles「十二使徒」の後継者と目されるキリスト教の高位聖職者。priest「司祭」やminister「牧師」を管轄する。redはrobesを修飾。

➂The Dutch「オランダ人」（theの付かないDutchは「オランダ語」）。credit A with B「AがBを持つと信じる」。These herbs were credited with supernatural healing powers.「これらの薬草には超自然的な治癒力があると信じられていた」。SinterklaasはSaint Nicholasのオランダ語名で、Santa Clausの語源。New Amsterdam「ニューアムステルダム」は、オランダが17世紀前半に北米植民地に建設した都市。これをイギリスが17世紀後半に占領し、New Yorkと改称した。along withはwithと同じ意味。He carried a camera with him along with food and water.「彼は食料や水といっしょにカメラを持って来た」。feast day「教会の祝祭日」。

➃Father Christmasはイギリス英語でSanta Clausの意味。

_➄The current depiction of Santa Claus is based on images drawn by cartoonist Thomas Nast for Harper’s Weekly beginning in 1863. _➅Nast’s Santa owed much to the description given in the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (also known as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”), first published in 1823. _➆The image was further defined by the popular Santa Claus advertisements created for the Coca-Cola Company from 1931 by illustrator Haddon Sundblum. _➇Sundblum’s Santa was a portly white-bearded gentleman dressed in a red suit with a black belt and white fur trim, black boots, and a soft red cap.

➄Harper’s Weekly beginning in 1863「1863年創刊のHarper’s Weekly誌」。

➅Nastの描いたサンタクロースの絵は、1823年発表の詩A Visit from St. Nicholasに多大な影響を受けている。

_➈Santa Claus is said to live at the North Pole with his wife (Mrs. Claus), where he spends the year making toys with the help of his elves. _➉There he receives letters from children asking for Christmas gifts. _⑪On Christmas Eve he loads his sleigh with toys and flies around the world, drawn by eight reindeer, stopping at each child’s house; _⑫he slides down the chimney and leaves the gifts, refreshing himself with the milk and cookies left for him by the household’s children.

➈the North Pole「北極点」。Cf. the Arctic「北極地方」。elvesはelf「小さな妖精」の複数形。

⑪load A with B「AにBを積む」。sleigh（ghは黙字）は馬（サンタクロースの場合はトナカイ）が引く「そり」（雪滑り遊び用のそりはsled/sledge）。reindeer「トナカイ」は単複同形。stopping以下は分詞構文。

⑫refreshing以下は分詞構文。refresh oneself「（飲食・休息で）元気を回復する」。
